Davenport was established immediately after the September 22, 1891 land run as a rural trading crossroads and stagecoach stop four miles south of its present location. The Davenport Post Office was established on March 29, 1892, with Nettie Davenport as the first postmaster. In 1898, the town moved to its present location on the railroad.
