Little Traverse Light stands on Harbor Point at the entrance to Harbor Springs on Little Traverse Bay, where it became a prominent aid to navigation and a distinctive feature of the waterfront. Though proposed in 1871 by Orlando M. Poe, it was delayed until the site was bought in 1883 and the station built in 1884. The lighthouse originally used a fourth-order Fresnel lens from Paris, and in 1896 gained a rare surviving fog bell tower. Staffed until 1963, it was then replaced by a modern light nearby. Though now on private property and closed to the public, it remains an important part of local maritime history.
