In the early 19th century, Methodist revival meetings were held 300 yards southeast on the farm of Thomas Palmer, Jr. Later, on October 1, 1844, David Campbell gave 1¼ acres to the Hiwassee Cumberland Presbyterian Campground and Church. Troops bivouacked here during the Civil War. George Anderson, a James County pioneer, is buried in the Campground Cemetery 75 feet northwest.
