Dawes Arboretum in Newark, Ohio, began as Beman and Bertie Burr Dawes's family farm retreat, where they cultivated trees and specimens from around the world, and it was formally founded in 1929 to promote the planting of forest and ornamental trees for public enjoyment and youth education. Now spanning nearly 1,910 acres, it includes extensive gardens, natural areas, trails, and a driving tour, with nearly 16,000 living plants. Its notable features include the Daweswood House Museum, a Japanese Garden, a northern bald-cypress swamp, restored Dutch Fork Wetlands, and nationally accredited collections, reflecting its importance in conservation, education, recreation, and historic preservation.
