Freedom Riders National Monument in Anniston, Alabama, preserves the site of a defining episode of the Civil Rights Movement: the May 14, 1961 attacks on interracial Freedom Riders challenging segregation in interstate travel under Jim Crow. At the former Greyhound depot, a white mob assaulted riders and chased their bus from town; later, another group arriving at the former Trailways station also faced violence. About 6 miles outside Anniston, the damaged Greyhound bus was forced to stop, and the mob firebombed it, producing an iconic photograph by Joseph “Little Joe” Postiglione. Established in 2017, the monument honors the riders and the dangers civil rights activists faced.
