The Moundville Archaeological Museum in Moundville, Alabama, preserves and interprets the history of the Moundville site through artifacts and findings from more than 60 years of archaeological work. Opened on May 16, 1939, as the Jones Archaeological Museum and first known as the Mound State Monument, it originally featured a central artifact section and two wings devoted to burials. Those burial wings closed in 1989 and were later replaced by a theater and exhibition halls, reflecting a broader interpretive mission. Now part of the University of Alabama Museums system, it remains a key place for understanding one of Alabama’s most important Native American sites.
