For generations, the Turkey Point Lighthouse has been part of Chesapeake Bay history, safeguarding people who lived, worked, and traveled there and standing as a symbol of security, safe passage, and the Bay’s enduring traditions. Although its navigational role has diminished with modern technology, its grandeur and mystery remain, and many stories of heroism, daunting challenges, and tragedy unfolded there. Fannie May Salter faithfully tended the Turkey Point Lighthouse from 1925 until 1947, and in 1943 the light changed from oil to electric, a major improvement. She was one of four women who tended the lighthouse between 1833 and 1947.
