Anne Arundel County Free School in Davidsonville, Maryland, is the only surviving Maryland school building erected in response to the Maryland Free School Act of 1723, which established the county’s first free school. Built between 1724 and 1746 and operating by then under schoolmaster John Wilmot, it was placed near the county’s center for the convenience of boarding children, when Anne Arundel County still included present-day Howard County. The two-story, six-room building remained in use until 1912. It may also be linked to Johns Hopkins, whose early education there preceded his later role in founding Johns Hopkins University. Today it is preserved as a museum.
