Possum Point is a small peninsula in Northern Virginia between Quantico Creek and the Potomac River, within the Washington, D.C., suburbs. It is chiefly known as the site of Dominion Virginia Power’s Possum Point Power Station, an electricity-generating facility that began as a coal-burning plant and was converted in 2003 to natural gas and oil, with a combined-cycle unit added the same year. In the early 2020s, older units were slated for retirement as steam generation declined. The area also retains Civil War significance: nearby Possum Nose held Cockpit Point Battery, part of the Confederate river defenses that disrupted traffic and temporarily closed the Potomac to imports into Washington.
