Todt Hill, a four hundred one-foot serpentine ridge on Staten Island, is the highest natural point in New York City and the highest elevation on the Atlantic coastal plain between Florida and Cape Cod. Its summit combines wooded land in the Staten Island Greenbelt with one of the borough’s most exclusive residential areas, along with surviving ponds, nearby religious and school sites, a golf course, and Moravian Cemetery. The hill’s name may derive either from the German word for death, linked to the cemetery opened in 1740, or from early Dutch settlers describing its rocky, sparsely treed terrain. In the early twentieth century, Ernest Flagg designed many local houses, and the hill later gained a place in popular culture and local lore.
