Old Market House, a brick Greek Revival building in Galena, Illinois, was built in 1845 as both city hall and an enclosed public farmers' market for a rapidly growing river town shaped by lead mining. Financed through share sales and supported by rents from market stalls, it became a hub of trade and local government, with additional sellers gathering in the market square outside. As shopping patterns changed in the early 20th century, the market declined, though city offices remained until 1938. Given to the state in 1947 and extensively restored in 1954, it now serves the public while preserving a vivid link to Galena’s frontier-era civic and commercial life.
