Middleport's Medal of Honor recipients were Edward A. Bennett, a PFC in Company B, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, honored for bravery during combat in Germany in February 1945 and presented the award by President Truman in October; Bennett retired from service with the rank of Major on February 1, 1965, and was born February 11, 1920 and died May 2, 1983. They also included Jimmy G. Stewart, a Staff Sergeant in Company B, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Division, who was killed in action in Vietnam on May 18, 1966, was honored for courage against overwhelming odds in protecting wounded comrades, was born December 25, 1942, and had Stewart Field at Fort Benning, Georgia, dedicated to his memory in February 1968.
