McHenry Mansion is a Victorian-Italianate house in downtown Modesto, California, built from 1882 to 1883 for rancher and banker Robert McHenry and long recognized as one of the city’s best-known surviving nineteenth-century homes. It remained in the McHenry family for 36 years across three generations before becoming the Elmwood Sanitarium in 1919 and then the Langdon Apartments in 1923, serving as apartments until 1976. As much of Modesto’s historic architecture disappeared, Aileen and Julio Gallo acquired the property to preserve it. Restored and opened to the public in 1983, it remains important for its architecture, family history, and local reputation for hauntings.
