Hopkins County was formed from Lamar and Nacogdoches Counties, created March 25, 1846, and organized July 13, 1846. It was named in honor of the pioneer Hopkins family, which came to Texas from Kentucky and Indiana. Its county seat was Tarrant from 1846 to 1858 and has been Sulphur Springs since.
