A textile factory was originally built on this site in an attempt to develop cotton as an alternative crop to tobacco, which remained a major crop in this area. As one of the county's leading manufacturing industries in the early 1800's, it later faced the decline of the cotton crop because of poor land conditions and overgrazing by sheep. The textile machinery was moved to Savage, Maryland, and operations at the factory continued with the saw and grist mills.
