Homestead is an L5 ordinary chondrite meteorite that fell in Iowa on February 12, 1875, in a spectacular evening fireball followed by rumbling and detonations that shook houses. Fragments landed across about 18 square miles between Amana and Boltonville, but snow and wooded terrain delayed recovery until spring. The first piece found was a 3.5-kilogram stone discovered by Sarah Sherlock south of Homestead, and larger masses were later uncovered. By December 2011, about 230 kilograms had been recovered. The fall drew international scientific interest, was first described by Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs, and its fragments were widely sold and collected in the United States and Europe.
