Near this site was the mule entrance to the Cincinnati coal mine, where on April 23, 1913, at 12:15 P.M., one of the worst mine explosions in U.S. history occurred. The disaster killed 96 miners and 1 rescue team member. Opened in 1835, the mine was one of the oldest in the area.
