Hearst San Simeon State Park, established in 1932 on California’s central coast between Cambria and San Simeon, protects 3,409 acres of rocky shoreline, wetlands, riparian corridors, and other rare coastal habitats. Its preserves include Santa Rosa Creek Natural Preserve, home to riparian forest, coastal wetlands, and the endangered tidewater goby, and San Simeon Natural Preserve, with wetlands, native plant communities, mima mound topography, and wintering monarch butterflies. Expanded by 1,100 acres in 2005, the park also preserves deep human history at the Pa-nu Cultural Preserve, whose archaeological site dates to 5,850 years before present, within a coast long inhabited by the Chumash.
