The Marine Corps Memorial was erected on November 13, 1948, by members of the First Marine Aviation Force Veterans Association in memory of the First Marine Aviation Force and of Roy S. Geiger, Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, later a general, who was the first commanding officer of Marine Flying Field in Miami, Florida, during World War I in 1918.
