Ennis House, completed in 1925 in Los Feliz, is Frank Lloyd Wright’s largest textile-block house in Greater Los Angeles and a major work from his transition away from Prairie designs toward ideas that later informed his Usonian houses. Designed for Charles and Mabel Ennis, the hilltop complex combines a main house and garage wing in a dramatic, fortress-like composition influenced by Mayan Revival forms and pre-Columbian motifs. Its most distinctive feature is the use of about 24,000 patterned concrete blocks tied with steel rods. Later altered, repaired, and restored after earthquake and rain damage, it remains celebrated for its design, film appearances, and historic protections.
