A fast-moving stream rushing through this ravine into an inlet on the river, now a parking lot, brought Hastings its first factory in the early 1840s, William Saunders' axle plant, while his home stood on the ravine's southern rim. Later the area included a foul-smelling rendering works, sugar mills, and a number of boarding houses, including Cotlets Hotel, visible to the right in a circa 1900 photograph. There were also makeshift saloons, one said to be called the Bucket of Blood. The area is now home to The Newington-Cropsey Foundation, and children played in a ravine playground there in 1933.
