Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park preserves the southern third of Key Biscayne and one of the region’s most important historic landscapes, centered on the Cape Florida Light, the oldest standing structure in Greater Miami. Named for Miami News editor Bill Baggs, whose advocacy helped protect the area from development, the park combines beaches, harbor, restored coastal habitats, and varied recreation. Its shoreline and waters support rich wildlife, including hundreds of bird species, sea turtles, manatees, and American crocodiles, while restoration has helped native habitats recover. Cape Florida also holds deep historical importance as a departure point for Black Seminoles and other fugitives escaping slavery to the Bahamas in the early 1820s.
