Near Surry, Virginia, this historic site preserves the remains of the second church built for Southwark Parish. It was probably erected by 1673 to replace an earlier parish church dating to about 1655. The church was abandoned not long after the American Revolutionary War, yet its ruins survived through the American Civil War. Its significance lies in preserving the physical trace of an early Virginia parish church and in connecting the colonial era, the Revolutionary period, and the Civil War landscape in one place. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
