William Letcher's grave is the oldest in Patrick County and bears an inscription saying that he was assassinated in his own house in the bosom of his family by a Tory of the Revolution on August 2, 1780, at about 30 years of age, ending with the words, "May the tear of sympathy fall upon the couch of the brave." The memorial is believed to have been placed by Letcher's daughter, Bethenia, before her death in 1845. It was carved by William Mountjoy, a stonecutter from the corner of 8th and Main Street, Richmond, Virginia. The structure and improvements were made possible by a donation from Jonathan Old of Greenwich, Connecticut, a direct descendant of William Letcher.
