Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park protects part of the Fakahatchee Strand, a long forested swamp in the Big Cypress section of the Everglades and one of South Florida’s distinctive wetland landscapes. The preserve is especially known for its rich plant life, including royal palm, bald cypress, bromeliads, ferns, and orchids, most famously the rare ghost orchid. It also supports many threatened and endangered animals, among them Florida panthers, wood storks, black bears, fox squirrels, and Everglades mink, along with a wide range of other wildlife. The park emphasizes quiet exploration through an unpaved scenic drive, a boardwalk, and guided tours focused on plants and wildlife.
