Town of Tonawanda Veterans Memorial

In Walter M. Kenney Park in the Town of Tonawanda, New York, this veterans memorial grew from a grassroots effort begun in 2004 to create a permanent gathering place honoring all who served in the United States Armed Forces. A committee formed in 2007 raised private donations and state grant funds, leading to construction in 2009 and dedication before a large crowd that included keynote speaker Colin L. Powell. Designed around a V-shaped granite monument, engraved plaques, and seven flagpoles, it quickly expanded in 2010 as local interest filled the first wall with veterans’ names. A restored Korean War-era Grumman Cougar nearby deepens its commemorative and local meaning.
