Estabrook Woods is a federally protected expanse of more than 1,700 acres in Concord and Carlisle, the largest contiguous undeveloped woodland within thirty miles of Boston. Though it appears wild, the landscape was shaped by Algonquian burning, colonial farming, and later forest regrowth, and it was long associated with the Estabrook family and admired by Henry David Thoreau. Protection developed gradually through local action, private cooperation, and state and federal recognition, preserving its environmental, archaeological, and historic importance. The woods support endangered and watch-list species, lie near Concord’s Revolutionary landscape, and today are managed cooperatively with public trails across part of the preserve.
