The Freedmen's Colony existed on Roanoke Island from 1862 to 1867. At its peak, more than 3,500 men, women, and children lived there, having come to the island in search of freedom and a better life. Its history included both hardship and triumph and reflected the struggles faced by freed people throughout the nation.
