In Jefferson County, Tennessee, the Civil War touched small towns, houses, mills, farms, rivers, railroads, and historic main streets as communities were swept into conflict. Tennessee was marked by battles, military leaders, and deep divisions over secession and slavery that created a war within a war and left lasting scars. Among the state's 275,000 enslaved men and women, many self-emancipated, and 20,000 self-liberated warriors fought for freedom in the U.S. Colored Troops. Although Tennessee seceded and supplied 120,000 soldiers to Confederate armies, Union sentiment remained strong, especially in East Tennessee, and 31,000 white Tennesseans fought for the Union, more than in any other Confederate state. More battles were fought in Tennessee than in any state except Virginia, and in Russellville the Nenney House later served as the General Longstreet Headquarters Museum, interpreting telegraph communications between Longstreet and his subordinates.
