Roxy Ann Peak, a prominent mountain on Medford’s eastern edge, is one of the city’s defining landmarks and a major feature of the Rogue Valley. Formed from some of the oldest rocks in the Cascades, it has long shaped both the landscape and human use of the area. People lived near it for thousands of years, and the Latgawa knew it as Al-wiya before settlers renamed it for Roxy Ann Bowen in the late 1850s. Its foothills later supported orchards and mining, while Prescott Park, created in 1937 and improved by Civilian Conservation Corps crews, helped preserve much of the mountain as Medford’s largest park and a valued recreation and wildlife area.
