During the pursuit of Union Col. Streight and Streight’s defense, fighting extended from Battle Ground, 26 miles northwest, to the capture at Lawrence, 80 miles east, in what was said to be the greatest cavalry fight in modern warfare. It passed here on May 1, 1863.
