Along the Saline River south of Carrier Mills, Illinois, this cluster of prehistoric sites preserves evidence of human occupation from about 2500 B.C. to 700 A.D. The earliest remains, from the Late Archaic period, include two small campsites and a larger base camp, indicating repeated use of the river corridor over many centuries. Occupation continued into the Early Woodland period, when pottery appeared and communities were likely part of the Crab Orchard culture within the broader Hopewell tradition. Middle Woodland sites show adoption of Hopewell technology without fully sharing its traditions, and a single projectile point indicates some Late Woodland presence.
