Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve in Spartanburg, South Carolina, grew from severely eroded former cotton fields into a 10-acre public garden through decades of work by Harold and Josephine Hatcher. Beginning in 1969 after retiring to Spartanburg, they restored depleted soil, filled eroded ground, created paths and ponds, and planted thousands of trees, shrubs, and flowers. They financed much of the project by renovating nearby properties and using rental income to support the garden. Among its notable features is a Conifer Garden with more than 200 species. The Hatchers later gave the preserve to the Spartanburg County Foundation, securing it for the community in perpetuity.
