Mountain Pass Station was maintained from 1858 to the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 as a stage stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route, the first mail and passenger line to link the east and west coasts of the United States. In the 1870's, this was also a stop for a branch of the El Paso & San Antonio mail line.
