During the Battle of Lang Vei on February 6, 1968, Detachment A-Team 101, Company C, 5th Special Forces came under attack by a North Vietnamese tank unit. LaPorte native and Green Beret Master Sergeant Charles W. Lindewald was missing in action until his remains were found in 2004. He was serving his fifth tour of duty and was awarded 3 Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star posthumously, and several other decorations during his career. He was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in 2005.
