Captain James Moore was a soldier of the Revolution who commanded a company at Cowpens, Guilford Court House, and Kings Mountain and was killed by Indians on July 14th, 1786. Martha Poague Moore and Jane Moore, his wife and daughter, were captured, taken to Chillicothe Ohio, and burned at the stake. William, Alexander, Margaret, John, and an infant, children of Captain Moore, were massacred. James and Mary Moore, son and daughter to Martha Evans, were captured and carried to Canada, held captive for five years, and were rescued by Thomas Evans, brother of Martha Evans. “Though he slay me yet will I trust him.”
