In 1918 Smith Sexton bought this former barn from Louis Burgess and, with his wife, turned the upstairs into winter living quarters while using the lower floor for a restaurant and spending summers running the Uncas Hotel, now the Northern Lake George Resort; after a quarrel with the Keenan brothers, Smith opened his own grocery store, and the building was also rumored to contain a private speakeasy. In 1947 it became the first headquarters of the new Hague Fire Department, whose first fire-fighting vehicle was a Jeep. Keith and Nancy De Larm bought it in 1948, and while Keith, a Captain in the Marine Corps, served in the Korean War, part of the building was leased to Fitzgerald's Hardware and Meat Store. In 1953 Keith moved the processing and bottling part of De Larm's Dairy downtown from the De Larm farm in West Hague, offering pasteurized and homogenized milk and other dairy products, while he and Nancy lived upstairs with their four children. In 1967 Keith De Larm closed the dairy and converted the building into four apartments and an office space. Roger Wilson leased space for a laundromat in 1971, and from 1973 to 1979 Jim Rypkema operated the laundromat while his mother, Betty Rypkema, ran a gift shop called Behold the Turtle. Ron Graser bought the building in 1980 and operated an auto body shop in the back, while Perry and Cathy Girard opened Lakeside Liquors. Alison V. Craig opened a realty office there in 1987, serving the community seven days a week. Rolly and Cathy Allen bought the building in 2003, Silver Bay Construction operated from a ground-floor office from 2004 to 2009, and Neil and Sandy Rypkema took over ownership in 2009.
