Bathhouse Row developed through successive generations of bathhouses at Hot Springs. In the 1830s, the earliest facilities were makeshift shelters perched over individual springs. Later, elaborate Victorian bathhouses flourished along the avenue, but their wooden structures were vulnerable to rot and destructive fires. The present collection, built between 1911 and 1939 during the Golden Age of Bathing, reflects Spanish mission and neoclassical architecture. The Buckstaff remains open for traditional bathing, and Bathhouse Row is preserved by the National Park Service as a significant national cultural landmark. At the Fordyce Bathhouse in the middle of the row, restored interiors include tubs, steam cabinets, and hydrotherapy equipment from 1915-1920.
