Shabbona Lake State Park, formally called Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area, is an Illinois state park about 70 miles west of Chicago. Spanning 1,550 acres of rolling prairie, it is centered on the 318.8-acre man-made Shabbona Lake, created in 1975 by damming Big Indian Creek, a tributary of the Fox River. The park is named for the Potawatomi leader Shabbona, connecting this modern artificial lake landscape to an older Indigenous history. On March 21, 2025, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed legislation authorizing transfer of the park’s ownership to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, marking a significant change in its stewardship.
