In 1934, a devastating fire in Niceville destroyed three grocery stores, a dry goods store, creamery, post office building, hotel, drug store, and fish warehouses. Two hundred CCC men formed bucket brigades with the fire crews of the Choctawhatchee National Forest and helped save buildings and stocks of merchandise. With no running water to fight the flames, the town for a time seemed likely to be completely destroyed until the forest firefighters and CCC workers took charge. The loss was estimated at $100,000, with little insurance. Even while the ruins still smoldered, space was made in Finck’s for the post office, the Niceville Fish Company set up offices there, and soon a grocery was added. Adolph’s establishment then became a complete arcade containing a post office, a wholesale and retail fish house, a grocery, a restaurant, a bakery, a draft beer dispensary, and the Niceville Masonic Lodge on the floor above.
