Fort Randall Dam was constructed from 1946 to 1956 as a rolled earth fill dam measuring 10,700 feet long, 4,300 feet wide at its base, and 165 feet high, using 50 million cubic yards of earth fill and 961,000 cubic yards of concrete. Its record discharge was 169,800 cfs in July 2011. Lake Francis Case, the reservoir formed by the dam, extends 107 miles with 567 miles of shoreline at elevation 1,375, covers 102,000 acres, reaches a maximum depth of 140 feet, and holds 5,700,000 acre feet of water, approximately 1.857 trillion gallons; its record pool was 1,374 feet in July 2011. The powerhouse has 8 tunnels, each 22 feet in diameter, and 8 generators producing 40,000 kW each for a total generating capacity of 320,000 kW. The outlet works have 4 tunnels, each 22 feet in diameter, with a discharge capacity of 128,000 cfs. The spillway has 21 tainter gates measuring 40 feet wide by 29 feet high, a discharge capacity of 508,000 cfs at elevation 1,375, a concrete surface area of 40 acres, an intake tunnel depth of 146 feet at elevation 1,375, and a tunnel length of 1,074 feet.
