Gilbert Mortier Marquis de Layfayette spent a night and a day at Rock Island, four miles from here, on May 9, 1825, after his steamboat was wrecked. Pioneers for miles came to see him, and the spot is now called Lafayette Spring. The place also honors Revolutionary soldiers buried in Perry County: Terence Connor, Thos. Cummings, George Ewing, Lemuel Mallory, Abram Hiley, Thomas Rhodes, John Lamb, and Jacob Weatherholt.
