Eagle Mesa is a prominent six thousand six hundred twenty-four-foot summit in Monument Valley on Navajo Nation land in southern Utah, visible from Highway 163 and rising steeply above the surrounding terrain. Along with nearby Setting Hen, it is one of the valley’s recognizable landforms. Its layered rock records geologic time from the Permian to the Late Triassic, and its striking form was shaped by erosion. The mesa also carries deep cultural meaning in Navajo tradition, reflected in several Navajo names and in beliefs that it is a place where the spirits of the deceased may go. Its northern tip includes Eagle Rock Spire, first climbed in 1970.
