In 1885 Isaac Trabue registered in Manatee County the land he had purchased and platted in 1884 as the town of “Trabue,” which in 1887 became Punta Gorda. He named about twenty streets after relatives, including Retta Esplanade for his sister Henrietta, Virginia and Taylor for his wife, Elizabeth for his mother, and Marion for another sister. The streets were planned to align with the Charlotte Harbor waterfront rather than run strictly north and south, and waterfront parks lay at the ends of the streets on the harbor. Trabue believed a shoreline of waterfront parks along Charlotte Harbor would attract snowbound northerners, and the parks were originally named for the streets that led to them. Although efforts were made over the years to commercialize some of the park land, sometimes successfully, most of the waterfront parks remained restful places along Charlotte Harbor. Harvey Park, where Perry and Marion McAdow received city permission to build their mansion, later became the site of an inn and then a hotel and restaurant. In the 1950s some parks from Harvey to Berry Street were combined and renamed Gilchrist Park.
