1
After the Battle of Eutaw Springs, the British army encamped at Wantoot Plantation, home of Daniel Ravenel, in St. John's Parish about 25 miles southeast of this site and 5 miles west of Bonneau. Major John Majoribanks died there on October 22, 1781, and was buried at Wantoot Plantation. In 1941, his grave and marker were moved here by the South Carolina Public Service Authority. Northampton Plantation, the residence of General William Moultrie, was also in St. John's Parish near Black Oak Church about 5 miles west of the present town of Bonneau and is now under the waters of Lake Moultrie. Before inundation, the Northampton Plantation marker was moved to its present location by the South Carolina Public Service Authority.
