Historic Sunrise Road in Mount Rainier National Park was completed in 1929 as part of the park’s master plan. Its design took advantage of the scenery while protecting the landscape, making it a distinctive example of road and site planning. Designed by a National Park Service landscape architect, the road follows a canyon rim instead of cutting through fragile meadows. Its long, easy curves were laid out to provide unobstructed views of the Emmons Glacier and the surrounding scenery. Before construction began, the entire road was planned to fit with the landscape. Built by several road contractors, Sunrise Road shows their craftsmanship in rustic natural-stone guardrails, handsome bridges, and scenic turnouts. After construction, the Civilian Conservation Corps planted native vegetation to heal the scars caused by the work. The park’s master plan, the first developed by the National Park Service, included more than 100 miles of roads and strongly influenced planning in other parks.
