Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, southwest of New Orleans on the west bank of the Mississippi River, offers unusually close access to two distinct coastal Louisiana wetland environments: swamp and marsh. Its marsh formed through saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico moving inland through canals, creating habitat different from the park’s swamp areas. These wetlands support wildlife including American alligators, coypu, raccoons, American mink, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, and northern cardinals. The park also provides day-use and overnight facilities, including boating access, a nature trail, swimming pools, cabins, campsites, and group accommodations, making it a nearby place to experience Louisiana’s swamp-and-marsh ecology.
