The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, opened in 1988 and was among the first three butterfly centers in the United States, giving it an early role in the country’s live-butterfly exhibit movement. Named for philanthropist and Days Inn founder Cecil B. Day, the glass-enclosed tropical conservatory is described as North America’s largest of its kind. Its 7,300-square-foot dome sustains a tropical habitat for more than a thousand butterflies from over fifty species, supported by nectar-producing plants. Butterflies arrive as chrysalises from farms in several countries, and the center also uses safeguards to prevent their escape. It later received LEED certification and underwent renovation to accommodate more visitors.
