East Hartford honored the men and women who answered their country’s call to service in the World War of 1917–1918, dedicating special memory to those who gave their lives: Merlin A. Barrows of Company E, 212th Engineers; Wallace H. Brown of the 101st Machine Gun Battalion; Charles C. Burdick of the Medical Corps, U.S. Army; Anthony R. Cersosimo of the U.S. Navy; Thomas Costello of Company D, 347th Infantry; Joseph E. Couture of Company K, 102nd Infantry; Stanley O. Crane of the Army at Raritan Arsenal; Frederick R. Forbes of Company C, 74th Infantry; John Glode of Headquarters Company, 56th Infantry; Miss Genevive A. Gunn, Yeomanette, U.S. Navy; Corporal Maurice A. Landers of Battery C, 79th Field Artillery; John A. MacLennan of the Royal Garrison Artillery, B.F.; Edward J. Marlowe of Company F, 2nd Battalion, C.W.S.; George Odenkirchen of the Army at Camp Merritt; Major George J. Rau of the 102nd Infantry; Frank C. Schleicher of the U.S. Navy; Arthur R. Steele of Motor Company No. 4, Medical Corps, U.S. Army; and Roland F. Walker of the Army at Fort Slocum, New York. Citizens of East Hartford erected the memorial in A.D. 1929 as a tribute to the dead, a memory to the living, and a token of loyalty to their country’s flag.
