Built of British-imported brick by the Colonial Proprietors of East Jersey, Proprietary House was the home of New Jersey’s last royal governor, William Franklin, in 1774, became a British military headquarters during the Revolution, was converted into a hotel called “The Brighton” in 1808, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
